STELLA 78

Stella is a one-man gaff sloop design, to be built with the strip-planking
method.
She has a steel centreboard with a ballast bulb (altogether 10-15kg) that can pivot
back underneath the hull and makes her quite stiff.
The steering is done with a line that is attached to the tiller and goes in a loop around the seating
compartment.
There are four lines from the mast-top: jib, peak, throat and a centreboard
hoist with a 3:1 purchase.
Drawings are available in three versions:
Stella 78 has the focus on low
weight. The framing is
made by 6mm plywood and the hull is quite low.
Stella 82 is one step bigger in all directions and has the framing
made of 9mm plywood.
Stella 90 is a stretched version of Stella
82

At a very late stage, I decided to extend the seating area backwards.

Grace O´Malley turned out surprisingly well, but there was still room for improvements. The decision to go ahead with a new project was taken before Grace was launched. The three major improvement aims was: 1) The weight. To put a 30kg boat hull on the car roof singlehanded is possible but tends to leave marks on the car paint. Bringing it down towards 20+ kg would save the car. 2) The Daggerboard. The nearby lake has an average depth of only 2 metres and a lot of submerged rocks shallower than that. So far I have only hit them in weak winds, but Stella will have a centerboard that can swing up beneath the hull. 3) The hull finish. The second attempt at strip-planking should give a better result then the first one wich was far from perfect. |
