The yacht building in China, as an industry
started a few years ago to gather speed. With labor and capital investment
costs at a fraction of western rates, in combination with the Chinese
government's active assistance to push the industry forward has resulted in
a tremendous boom for both local yards as well as huge western investments in
building plants. Numerous western ship-builders are today operating
and successfully build yachts and other pleasure crafts in the PRD or Pearl
River Delta, which is a vast area of manufacturing industries in the
Guangdong district, right between Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Canton).

Several
Scandinavian, European and American yacht manufacturers have already
moved to the lot or parts of the manufacturing to other countries but
particularly China. Some of them have erected their own plants with
Chinese labor or working as partners alongside with their Chinese
colleagues. In general the opinion of this out-sourcing is very
positive. Of course there might be somewhat friction in the beginning,
but as the old veterans use to say, - The main reason for problems in
the beginning is interpretation difficulties, and when this is
overcome, well the operations start smoothen up and you can harvest the
fruits of the joint venture.

Shanghai and
Guangdong with the Pearl River Delta area are the areas which further
transports to Europe will be easiest to find. ScandiMarine Ltd. is
mainly working with one huge Chinese cargo operator, with ships
departing virtually all the time from Shanghai or Hong Kong to all major
seaports in Europe. The transport costs are "daily prices" and can not
be quoted here until we know the size of the transport, time and
destination port.
-
Flights from Europe
to China are very easy to find. All major airports have daily flights to
Hong Kong and Shanghai, and competition has depressed the airline fees
dramatically. Amsterdam - Hong Kong takes round 11 hours and KLM tickets
can be obtained from 700 EURO with return. Taxi from the airport takes
you directly to China Ferry Terminal in HK/Kowloon and high speed cats
take you to China/PRD in less than two hours.

China is a huge
country where you will experience, past, present and future, only
minutes separating them. In general the Chinese people are very kind and
helpful and we are sure your trip will be full of nice memories and loads of business opportunities. To find a business sideline is very
easy. Some companies are actively searching for smaller sidelines to
compensate their i.e. transport costs which give their yacht product
even higher impact here.
