Små ting

Orkar du inte ett steg mer,
inte lyfta ditt huvud,
dignar du trött under hopplös gråhet -
tacka då nöjd de vänliga, små tingen,
tröstande, barnsliga.
Du har ett äpple i fickan,
en bok med sagor därhemma -
små, små ting, föraktade
i den tid, som strålade levande,
men milda fästen under de döda timmarna.

(Karin Boye, "Moln")
If you cannot take another step,
cannot raise your head,
if you are weighted down tiredly by hopeless greyness -
then thank contented the kind, little things,
comforting, childish.
You have an apple in your pocket,
a book with stories at home -
little, little things, scorned
in the time, that shone alive,
but mild forts in the dead hours.
