Roads being built in Great Britain and Ireland Updated July 18, 2004 Great Britain Useful links: The Highways Agency The Department for Transport The Motorway Archive CBRD This site has a lot of info, including construction. Present projects: M1/A1. Edinburgh southwards, towards Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The motorway is being extended from Edinburgh. The extension is going from Haddington to Dunbar. However, it is not clear that this will not just be a dual-carriage road, but below motorway standard. Most of this road is not in motorway standard so a lot could be done in the future. M1/A1 The road from Newcastle-upon-Tyne southwards to Leeds and Sheffield. Eventually there will be a complete motorway from Leeds to Newcastle, but not until 2010. Some parts are already being constructed, notably the part going from the M62 to Leeds-North (More information). M6 A new toll-road going around Birmingham, beside the old road. Is now open. More information. A/M77 Glasgow to Kilmarnoch. Work has started, completion due in march 2005. More information. A249 Sheerness to the A2. A very short distance of four-lane road. There is a tender, and the contractor should be appointed in the fall 2003. More information. Ireland Useful links: National Roads Authority Present projects: M1 North of Dublin towards the border to Northern Ireland. The road is completed all the way from Dublin to Dundalk. In 2003 the bypass Drogheda (and other parts) opened, in total 38 new km. The bit past Dundalk is being built at the moment, see website, and is going to be finished in 2006. The distance from Dundalk to the border is quite short. M3/N3. Dublin to Navan. The N3 is going northwest from Dublin to the border to Northern Ireland. Turning the N3 into the M3 is being planned and building could begin in 2005. Should in that case be finished by 2008. M4/N4 Dublin westwards. A part has been made into motorway already and now the part from Kinnegad to Kilcock is being built. Due to be ready in 2006, see website. M6/N6 from Kinnegard (connecting to the M4 coming from Dublin) to Galway, on the west coast. A motorway is on its way from Kinnegard to Athlone, a distance of approximately 40 km. Not quite clear on which stage this is. M7/N7 West of Dublin, towards Limerick. Newbridge to Kildare to Monasterevin is going to be built. The Kildare bypass opened in Q4, 2003. The Monasterevin bypass is on its way, hopefully opening in Q4, 2004. M8/N8
Going from the M7 (coming from Dublin) to Cork. The Fermoy
bypass, north of Cork, is going to be constructed starting this
year. It is supposed to be ready by 2007. |
