Roads being built in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania Updated June 23, 2004 Bulgaria Present projects: Plovdiv to the Turkish border. A small portion of the road between the capital Sofia and the Turkish border is missing. There has been construction going on for some time, but it is unclear on what stage it is at. The Greek border to Sofia to the Romanian border. This is an EU project. A motorway from Sofia southwards past Kulata to Promahon in Greece is due to be ready in 2010, according to the present EU plan. Greece Useful links: Hellenic Ministry for the environment, physical planning and public works Present projects: The Egnatia Road. This a west-east going motorway connecting the west coast of Greece with the Turkish border in the far east. It is going through the cities of Igoumenitsa, Ioánnina, Grevená, Kozáni, Véroia, Thessaloniki, Kavála, Xánthi and Alexandroúpoli. There are also going to be connections to the north from the motorway, connecting to Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria. In the EU plan (the EU is partly financing the building) the Egnatia Road is supposed to be ready in 2006. Some parts are not going to be in full motorway standard. More information. The Road Patra to Athens to Thessaloniki to Evzoni (the Macedonian border). In the EU plan for the construction the road is said to be ready in 2008. More information. The Rion-Antirion bridge, at Pátra. A motorway bridge is being built across the Korinthian sea (is that what it is called?), from the peninsula Peloponissos to the mainland and the (narrow) road leading to the northwest of the country. Construction begun in 1998 and the bridge is supposed to be ready in 2004. More information. The Attiki Odos motorway is being built around Athína (Athens) to connect various parts of the city as well as the new airport. Construction was begun in 1997 and some parts are ready. More information. Romania Present projects: Bucuresti (the capital) eastwards to the coast and Constanta. They has been building on this road for quite a while and it is unclear to me if the road is finished. The Hungarian border (at Bors) to Brasov. Motorway project which is the largest in Europe. Due to begin in July 2004. More information. The EU also has a plan for Romania, which in part is about financing the above-mentioned project. According to the EU plan the construction of the part between Sibiu and the Hungarian border is going to be completed in 2007. From there on the motorway will continue to the Bulgarian border, with a link to Bucuresti. For any additions or corrections, please send a message. |
