Noah's E39 needs a VGA BordMonitor

Money spent

BM 220$-75$=150$
Hiinfo D652 640$
LED's for backlight 50$
Components for dash pcb 120€ = 165$
pcb without components 30€ = 41$
late delivery of dash pcb comp 9€ = 12$
button interface pcb 80$
button interface components 70$
cables + p&p 40$
Total 1248$

Time spent

< 19 feb  10 hours. Emails, ordering parts, build of LED bars, and start of building dash pcb.  10 hours
< 3 mars Starting mp3car thread and reverse engineer button pcb. 5 hours
< 8 mars Disassembling monitor and making eagle button schematics 5 hours
< 17 mars I have been working hard with the button interface pcb that I did not know was needed to begin with.  10 hours
< 21 mars dash pcb almost done. Only LED's and stuff left because I am not 100% sure how to assemble it in the BM.

I have also spent a lot of time trying to make the layout for the button interface. Difficult as there is a lot of parts that has to fit on a small area.

5 hours
< 4 April Finally layout is done. I will review it check schematics and mechanical dimensions and placements of components before order. 15 hours
<25 April Been busy with other things, but I have made two cables. 2 hours
< 10May pcb's are built 10 hours

This is the connection to the BM apart from USB, VGA and AV2 for rearview camera if used.

Red, 12V (thicker)
Grey, 0V (thicker)
purple,  PC ON. Connects to next cable
orange, USB ON. Connects to next cable
green, Remote out. Connect to power amp of sound system.
white, Ibus. Connect to IBus anywhere in car.
yellow, 5V input for DVD. It requires 10W, and that cannot be supplied with USB power only. Connect to 5V on PC PSU with fuse. (5V can be generated with DCDC internally in BM, but such a device is 80$...)

This is cable installed next to PC. On the left side is inputs, and on the right is connections to PC

Inputs

Red, 12V Fused Battery
orange, USB_ON, connected to orange on BM cable
purple, PC_ON, connected to purple on BM cable

Output

Red, 12V power
black, 0V. 0V has to be connected separately to car on PC. This 0v is just for the relays inside the shrink tube
2x purple. Relay switch to replace PC on-off switch

It was very hard to make the layout. I ended up doing 1/3 by hand.

I have been working hard with the button interface pcb that I did not know was needed to begin with. This will be a nice kit though, that will make the rest of the BM electronics redundant. But it is quite a lot of work first investigating the button pcb to interface, making an interface and then writing code for it.

I have also spent some time building the dash pcb.

Disassembly of monitor, Making eagle buttons schematics.

Hiinfo monitor has been received. I will take it apart and do the LED conversion next week as I am going away for a long weekend tomorrow.

Art on HacktheIbus has offered to build button interface. This interface was not needed in the E46 BM, but if I would do the E46 again I would include that design with the purpose of loosing all BMW electronics.

Robbie has emailed on HacktheIbus, and he is doing the PC installation

The BM was in a terrible state. I got 75US refund

LED's and BM has arrived. There is not enough room for the DVD inside, but I plan to cut a hole on the side. Hopefully it will still fit in the car. Let me know what you think.

The BM definitely needs a proper cleaning. I have no reason to believe that there is anything wrong with the electronics, but we will see later.

This is how LED backlight will look like: (I have not received your 2DIN yet, Noah)

Parts has arrived and I have started to assemble the dash pcb. One component is late, and is estimated for 26/2

2010-02-07

I have ordered components for the adapter pcb, 121€ including p&p. I already had a spare pcb (30€)

Remaining is some cables, and a sensor for DVD detection that I will get from Elfa. Hopefully I have not forgotten anything...

I received 1000$ as prepayment.

A bordmontor perfect for this kind of slaughter was bought on ebay at 220$

A Hiinfo D652 was ordered from autovision at 640$

60 LED's was ordered for LED backlight at about 50$
