“Amateurs (or Dilettantes)” is a video interview with Fred Torssander, a writer and journalist based in Uppsala Sweden. Torssander is a member of Uppsala Communist Party and he’s a frequent debater in issues around unemployment, flexicurity and workfare.
The starting point for this interview is a text by Torssander published by Yelah, where he puts forward a serious critique of the term “cultural worker”. First he gives an historical background of cultural patronage, eastern european intelligensia and the artistic nomenklatura – then he talks about possible strategies for a radical artistic practice of today.
According to Torssander, artists can either be dilettantes (rich, economically independent) or amateurs! Goodbye to the professional cultural worker!
